Research Interests:
Dilute Solutions of Flexible and Semiflexible Polymers
Moderately Concentrated Solutions of Flexible Polymers
Nematic Solutions of Semiflexible Polymers
Studies in these topics center around the use of static and dynamic light scattering and rheological measurements to elucidate issues of the conformation and dynamics of macromolecules and their interactions in solution. Physical chemical measurements include photon correlation and integrated intensity light scattering, size exclusion chromatography and fluorescence spectroscopy. The light scattering studies involve the use of lasers and a computer-based aurocorrelation and data acquisition system. Five different rheometers are available for the rheological studies. These are designed to permit studies over a wide range of temperature and response time. The measurements include the creep and recoverable compliances over a wide range of time, temperature and stress, the flow birefringence, and the response to a deformation sinusoidally periodic in time. The results are compared with molecular or continuum mechanical models where possible.
Dilute Solutions: Static and dynamic light scattering and viscometry are used to characterize the intramolecular conformation and intermolecular interactions. Examples have included rodlike polyelectrolytes, branched and linear flexible chain polymers, as well as polymers that tend to associate in solution. The latter often involve metastable association that persists even in dilute solution as a precursor to intermolecular structure that will have a substantial role in the properties of the polymer in the undiluted state.
Moderately Concentrated Solutions: The
viscoelastic properties of moderately concentrated
solutions of flexible chain polymers have been studied by
rheological measurements as well as by dynamic light
scattering methods. Examples have included systems
that can form a gel under appropriate conditions, and
this area is a subject of some current
investigations. Model systems have been
devised that will permit control of the gel structural
features, to elucidate the effect of these on the
viscoelastic properties of the system. Nematogenic polymer solutions: Recent studies have involved the evolution of texture and the disappearance of loop defects as a nematic solutions of a rodlike polymer anneal to a defect-free texture--interaction of the loop defects with external magnetic fields has also been studied. Rheological and rheo-optical studies on solutions in shear deformation of the same systems reveal the evolution of the texture with increasing time at a given stress, and as a function of the stress. The systems studied (including KevlarTM solutions) do not align at low deformation rates, but may approach alignment at higher rates. |
