Health Professions Program
The University's Health Professions Program can aid you in your pursuit of a medical career. While students from any division of the University can elect to complete courses required to be considered for admission to medical and other schools of health professions, Chemistry is a strongly recommended major. Students in the chemistry program at Carnegie Mellon obtain the in-depth background in subjects that are vital for successful careers in medicine or medical research (e.g. through M.D./Ph.D programs).

Students interested in pursuing careers in medicine should consult the director of the Health Professions Program for specific recommendations and other details.

Interdisciplinary Programs
One of the greatest strengths of studying chemistry at Carnegie Mellon is the opportunity to participate in interdisciplinary studies with other departments.

For example, chemistry majors have undertaken research in:

• Biological Sciences (including biochemistry)

• Mathematical Sciences

• Physics

• Materials Science and Engineering

• Civil and Environmental Engineering

Special Research Opportunities
Two highly competetive research opportunities that are open to chemistry majors are given in the biological sciences section:

1. The Merck Computational Biology and Chemistry Program
2. Beckman Scholars Research

Teaching Certification
Through a cooperative intercollege program between the Mellon College of Science and nearby Chatham College, a student can major in chemistry, earn a minor in secondary education, and also qualify for teacher certification in chemistry.
