The Polymer Science Option for the B.S. in Chemistry

The curriculum for the degree Bachelor of Science in Chemistry permits students to take a number of elective courses in chemistry and other fields, particularly in the junior and senior years. Students may wish to complete a group of elective courses from several specialty areas, called "options," to complement their technical education. The required courses for the B.S. in Chemistry are unchanged, and each option leads to the Bachelor's degree in Chemistry and provides students with expertise in a specific area not covered by the normal undergraduate curriculum. Please see

Options for the B.S. in Chemistry

in the Chemistry Department's web site for a complete description of the program and requirements for the B.S. in Chemistry. A student who completes the recommended courses for any of these options will receive a certificate from the Department of Chemistry as formal evidence of the accomplishment and a notation of this will be made on the student's transcript.

The courses that should be taken as electives for the Polymer Science Option are as follows:

Polymer Science Option

09-502Organic Polymer Chemistry09 units
09-509Physcial Chemistry of Macromolecules09 units
39-802Colloids, Polymers and Surfaces Laboratory II12 units
09-xxxElective in Polymer Science09 units

[Elective may be 09-445, Undergraduate Research (polymer project), or an upper level course in polymer science such as 09-505, Polymer Rheology]
