Polymer Science& Engineering

Carnegie Mellon University

The faculties of the Departments of

Chemistry

and

Chemical Engineering

offer opportunities in graduate studies in polymer science and engineering in their respective Departments

Together, the faculty offer a variety of courses to provide the student with a firm background in the field, and provide a research environment covering a wide range of topics for study.

Please browse the information on this page, and feel free to contact any of the faculty for additional information on their special interests.

Links are provided to the Departmental Home Pages, where additional information may be obtained.

The Pittsburgh Scene

The polymer science and engineering community in the Pittsburgh area offers a wide range of opportunity. In addition to the many seminars and lectures on topics of polymer science and engineering at Carnegie Mellon and the nearby University of Pittsburgh, the Polymer Group of the Pittsburgh Section of the American Chemical Society holds 6-8 dinner meetings per year (no charge to graduate students!) with speakers giving after dinner lectures on timely topics of interest to its members. Regional and national meetings of technical societies meet in Pittsburgh from time to time as well, to augment this fare.

The Colloids, Polymers and Surfaces (CPS) program offers enrichment for graduate students in both its seminar series and its annual Poster-Session for the CPS research community. The CPS program is an interdisciplinary activity of the Departments of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Physics and Civil & Envionmental Engineering. This enrichment is further augmented by an annual MiniSymposium in Polymer/Colloid Science featuring lectures by polymer scientists at Carnegie Mellon and the University of Pittsburgh, along with a poster session (see 2000 MiniSymposium Program for a "pdf" file of a recent program).

The location in Pittsburgh of several major companies involved in polymer technology affords the opportunity for interactions with industrial colleagues. Graduate students frequently find themselves in courses with students from industry, providing a vantage of the subject matter from outside the sometimes insular academic community. Doctoral graduate students often will have a scientist from a local research laboratory as a member of their Advisory Committee, and sometimes take advantage of specialized equipment available in the industrial laboratory.
