Selected Projects

Information about the projects below is available online.

MCS Diversity Planning and Implementation (ongoing)

In keeping with President Cohon’s commitment to increasing diversity at Carnegie Mellon, MCS and each of the departments in the college has developed a diversity strategic plan.

Pittsburgh for Prospective Graduate Students web site

A web site about Pittsburgh developed to represent the diversity of life in the city as well as the distinctive characteristics that make Pittsburgh very attractive as a place for graduate studies.

Virtual Chemistry Laboratory

Served as educational consultant for the development and assessment of chemistry education software has been rooted in a collaboration with David Yaron. The Virtual Lab is now a key piece of software in the ChemCollective and is being used across the US. I am not currently active on the project so questions can be directed to Dave Yaron or Mike Karabinos (mk7@andrew.cmu.edu).

MCS Undergraduate Recruiting Web Site

A collaboration of the Council of Undergraduate Advisors, myself, and Nicole Reading, this site showcases what makes MCS distinctive and exciting for students. Eric Grotzinger and I also produced a video on the MCS student experience that was directed by Ryan Dixon, a graduate of Carnegie Mellon’s School of Drama with a degree in directing.

MCS Policy on Graduate Ombudspersons

The College policy in the MCS Handbook describing this role addresses the potential need for an intermediary to facilitate discussion in complex or confidential matters, or address issues in earlier stages proactively.

Revision of Chemistry Ph.D. Program Requirements

Based on both a departmental survey and a series of focus groups to assess the graduate program, the Graduate Program Committee, the revised Ph.D. requirements are designed to improve students’ research momentum and timely progress toward the Ph.D. The changes adopted in Fall 2000 and extended in Fall 2002 are reflected in the Guide to Graduate Studies.

Collected Wisdom

This book was created through a series of discussions with Carnegie Mellon TAs that provides both concrete strategies in different disciplines and the underlying rationales for when and why those strategies are effective so that they can be easily adapted by others. It is available upon request to Carnegie Mellon students (or for a fee to others, depending on availability). Contact Michele DiPietro at dipietro@andrew.cmu.edu if you would like a copy.

Promoting Academic Integrity

Co-authored with colleagues in the Eberly Center for Teaching Excellence and Student Affairs, this booklet for Carnegie Mellon students, TAs and faculty provides information to support the community in maintaining high standards of academic integrity.

Eberly Center for Teaching Excellence Graduate Support Programs

Designed the Documentation of Teaching Development program for future faculty and created the Teaching Fellows program through which experienced graduate student instructors are trained to observe fellow graduate students’ teaching and provide feedback.
