Rea Freeland is Associate Dean for Special Projects for the Mellon College of Science and Associate Head of the Department of Chemistry. Her primary responsibilities include external relations, diversity and climate issues, and graduate student concerns.

She is responsible for overseeing Advisory Board visits for MCS and Chemistry and facilitating key corporate and alumni relationships, including starting a Dean’s Leadership Council. In addition, she serves as graduate ombudsperson for MCS and is co-leading with Gregg Franklin, Associate Dean for Faculty and Graduate Affairs, the college’s diversity efforts.

Within the Chemistry Department, she oversees the graduate program and assists the Head with faculty affairs, including junior faculty mentoring. Questions related to undergraduate affairs should be directed to Karen Stump, Director of Undergraduate Studies.

In addition, she has led a Carnegie Mellon projects related to graduate student concerns such as developing the first university-wide graduate student survey and writing Collected Wisdom: Strategies & Resources for TAs while at the Eberly Center for Teaching Excellence.

Her research interests have involved development and assessment of innovative approaches to chemistry education in collaboration with David Yaron.
