RNAs have emerged in recent years as major regulators of gene function. Chakrabarti Group uses multidisciplinary approaches combining Genomics Genetics and Biochemistry to study RNA based enzymatic processes in human diseases. We seek to understand : a) the mechanism of RNA function in chromosome end (telomere) replication and b) mRNA processing at the post-transcriptional level of gene regulation to elucidate their role in the development of human diseases. In addition to structural and functional analysis of RNA and RNA-protein interactions, our long-term goal is to develop mechanism-based inhibitors, which will target either unique RNA structural folds or novel RNA-protein interactions to control pathogen proliferation.
