you have 2 cations and add a common anion which will form insoluble salts with both. what is the maximum amount of the anion you can add and be sure that you only have one salt present. in other words, you add anion to precipitate the less soluble salt, but addition of additional anion will simply create more of the less soluble salt. you will eventually get to a point where the second salt starts to precipitate. you dont want to get that far, but how far is it?
