Frank Millero '64 '65 Honored with Two Major Awards

Frank Millero is the 2011 recipient of the Victor Moritz Goldschmidt Award from The Geochemical Society. The medal is traditionally awarded during a ceremony at the V. M. Goldschmidt Conference, which this year will take place in Prague in August. Professor Millero also received the 2011 Florida Award from the American Chemical Society for his significant contributions to the advancement of the chemistry profession. According to the University of Miami press release, "Millero is a leader in the application of physical chemistry to natural waters, and his work has defined the field for the last forty years. As director of the UM Rosenstiel School Marine Physical Chemistry Lab, he uses thermodynamic and kinetic principles to better understand the biogeochemical processes occurring in the marine environment."

Bridging Research Communities Conference

The Bridging Research Communities Conference, an undergraduate research conference, is an opportunity for the department to stay connected with alumni in the region, and for alumni to be able to stay in touch with us for their own research or for their students' graduate school planning. The last conference, held on October 20, 2012, featured two alumna speakers, Codrina Popescu (S'00), Ursinus College, and Violeta Marin (S'05), Abbott Laboratories — Global Pharmaceutical Research and Development.

Previous years, alumni have visited from Dickinson College (PA), Ursinus College (PA), Shenandoah College (VA), and Christopher Newport University (VA), or sent their students from Allegheny College (PA), Case (OH), College of Staten Island (NY), Duquesne University (PA), and Wright State University (OH). By special arrangements with our Dean's Office, we were also happy to host a group from as far as Xavier University of Louisiana. If you might be interested in attending or sending a small group of students, please contact Prof. Linda Peteanu (peteanu@andrew.cmu.edu) for more information.
