Haifeng Gao Receives Prestigious 2007 Chinese Government Award for Outstanding Self-Financed Students Abroad
Haifeng Gao, fifth year student in the Matyjaszewski group, has received the 2007 Chinese Government Award for Outstanding Self-Financed Students Abroad. This award is granted across all fields of study in the world and was presented to only 72 Chinese students in the United States. The award, including a check and certificate, was presented in New York by the Consulate General of the People's Republic of China on April 26, 2008. The awardees who were able to attend the award ceremony in New York are shown here.
Haifeng Gao has also been selected as this year's recipient of the Guy C. Berry Graduate Research Award in the Mellon College of Science to be presented May 5, 2008.
Haifeng's research has used atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) for the synthesis of functional polymers with complex architectures, especially star-like nanogels, branched polymers and polymer networks. He has co-authored more than 20 peer-reviewed papers in international journals, including 6 papers in Journal of the American Chemical Society and 10 papers in Macromolecules. Upon completion of his Ph.D. in December 2008, he will begin a post-doctoral position with Jean Frechet at the University of California Berkeley.
